What is Clinical Neuropsychology?
Clinical Neuropsychology is a specialty in professional psychology that applies principles of assessment and intervention based upon the scientific study of human behavior as it relates to normal and abnormal functioning of the central nervous system. A clinical neuropsychologist is a licensed psychologist with expertise in how behavior and skills are related to brain structures and systems.
What is a neuropsychological assessment?
A neuropsychological assessment provides a snapshot of your cognitive strengths and weaknesses at a given point in time. Neuropsychological tests evaluate functioning in a number of areas including: general intelligence, attention, working memory, processing speed, language, perception, sensorimotor functions, mood state and emotion, and personality styles. Testing involves taking paper-and pencil or computerized tests and answering questions.
Scores on these tests are interpreted by comparing your score to that of healthy individuals of a similar demographic background (i.e., of similar age, education, gender, ethnicity, etc.). A neuropsychologist then examines all of the data from the evaluation to determine a pattern of cognitive strengths and weaknesses and yield information about the structural and functional integrity of your brain.
Why get one?
- Assist in a differential diagnosis.
- Provide a baseline against which subsequent evaluations can be compared. We can document whether your functioning has declined or improved as a result of treatment.
- To help determine if a surgical procedure (e.g., neurosurgery, deep brain stimulation, cardiac device, transplant) is appropriate.
- Reveal areas of daily functioning with which you may need assistance or indicate rehabilitation potential.
Do I need to prepare for testing?
You will be given an adult health history questionnaire to fill out prior to testing. Bring this paperwork and glasses or hearing aids if you use them. Try to rest and relax before your evaluation. The most important thing is to try your best.
